TribLIVE reviews Dave Newman’s “Raymond Carver Will Not Raise Our Children”

Dan Charles is in a rut.

The lowly paid college English professor is worried about keeping his job, frustrated by his family’s debt and longing for the days when writers were treated like rock stars.

As the narrator in “Raymond Carver Will Not Raise Our Children,” a new novel by Trafford resident Dave Newman, Charles juggles the desire to be a good husband and father with the notion that some of the best writing of the last century spawned from a wild lifestyle.

One of the running themes in the book is whether a writer must mess his life up to have enough good material to be able to sit down and create a masterpiece.
